What a typical online merger does with your files
Many web PDF tools do the work on their own servers. Your browser uploads the files, the server combines them, and you download the result. Reputable services say they delete the files afterwards: iLovePDF, for example, says uploaded files are removed from its servers within two hours. That may be fine for a flyer. It's a policy you have to trust, though, and for client files or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement or your employer's rules, uploading may not be allowed at all.
A tool that runs in the browser works differently. The page loads once, then your own computer reads the files and writes the new PDF. Nothing is sent anywhere.
How to tell whether a site uploads your files
- Read its privacy or security page. Words like uploaded, our servers or deleted after mean your files leave your computer.
- Try it offline. Open the page, switch off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable, then merge. A browser-only tool keeps working; a server-based one fails.
- Watch the network log. Open your browser's developer tools (F12 on Windows, Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), go to the Network tab, then merge. Large outgoing requests while you merge are your files being uploaded.
Options already on your computer
- Mac: Preview can combine PDFs. Open the files, show the thumbnails sidebar from the View menu, and drag pages from one sidebar into the other. Apple notes that Preview saves changes automatically, so duplicate your originals first (File > Duplicate).
- Windows: the usual routes are a desktop PDF editor installed on the computer or a tool that runs in the browser. Either way, check that it works offline.
Merge PDFs privately with Pagewright
- Open Pagewright. Open Pagewright in your browser. Once the page has loaded, the merging happens on your computer; you can even switch off Wi-Fi.
- Add your files. Drop your PDFs (and any JPG, PNG or WebP images) onto the page, or press Add files. Each file becomes a group of page thumbnails.
- Put the pages in order. Drag pages within a file or into another one, or move a whole document with the arrows on its group header. Rotate, delete or insert a blank page if you need to.
- Choose One merged PDF. In the Output panel, pick One merged PDF and type a file name. The preview shows the file and its page count before anything is made.
- Build and save. Press Build, then save the PDF. Nothing was uploaded at any point.
Pagewright merges on your device
Merge, split, reorder, rotate and extract pages from any mix of PDFs and images. No upload, no account, no daily limit, and it works offline once loaded, or as a single file you download.
What it doesn't do: it can't open password-protected PDFs (remove the password in your PDF reader first), and it doesn't edit the text on a page. Its optional Shrink setting redraws pages as pictures, so leave it off when the text must stay selectable.
Practical tips
- Number your files (01-statement.pdf, 02-receipt.pdf) so the order is obvious when you lay them out.
- Fix sideways pages before you save. Rotating one thumbnail now is quicker than redoing the file later.
- Keep the separate originals until you've opened the merged PDF and checked every page.
- Very big sets depend on your computer's memory: thousands of pages or files of several hundred MB can get slow.
